native PA snake?

hogislands_girl May 24, 2007 07:29 AM

i had a customer come into my store the other day, telling me of a snake her son had found. its a black, yellow, and green banded snake found in northeastern PA. now ive lived in nepa for all my life, and i live in the country, and never ran across this kind of coloration. does n e one know what this may be? i cant find any pictures on the web of all 19 non venemous snakes on the web ( nor the 3 venemous).

well, I'm by no means an expert, but if you change "banded" to "stripped", then you have a garter snake.

...sorry, I meant "striped"; don't want anyone to think I meant something perverted there

Yeah, I'm thinking a garter or ribbon. Lot's of people aren't quite clear on exactly what "banded" means.

well i had her clarify that, i asked her banded like a striped king snake, all around and not just across. she said it was banded like a coral snake.

If she's colorblind, Red may look green....

I certainly can't think of anything native to the US that really fits that description. Did she SEE the snake or was she going by her son's description?

Occasionally you'll see a garter where the "checkering" lines up and looks somewhat like bands...

Maybe a greenish morph of Timber Rattlesnake...

Then there's these:

I assume you already know that "non-snake" people are generally very bad at describing snakes...

well i think she KNOWS its a snake, her son has it at her house, and her husband use to breed pythons. they were wondering, if possibly its an "escape" snake (someones loose pet), or if it took a ride on a pallet. we get animals loose up here from things being shipped state to state, country to country. i actually recieved a whites tree frog, from wegmans. they found it in their produce.

Since it is still available for a photograph, if you could do that & post it up here, it would make i.d. really easy.

It could be an escaped pet. Normally people's descriptions of snakes are horrid, but if they have snakes then she probably is being fairly accurate. A picture would be nice. Now we are all curious!
