Gators going off rats

charles May 24, 2007 08:41 PM

Hey guys,

Has any one had their crocodilians go off a certain food that they normally take?

My sub adult American Alligator has always had rodents in his diet, but for what ever reason this year he is spitting them out. He is eating everything else from chicken parts, fish, crawfish and crabs. But when I offer rats he takes them and then lets go.

My concern is that rats where my main source of whole prey. I have been able to put some mice in his chicken, but I just dont get why hes being picky.

Yes, it happens from time to time and I'm not entirely sure why. I have had a few Nile crocodiles that will feed very well on wild hog for many feedings only to one day totally reject it in favor of chicken. Then return to the hog a few feedings later.

I cannot ever remember it happening with rodents however.
