Tell me, is this chameleon healthy?

Trevor17 May 25, 2007 07:46 AM

I saw an ad saying "Chameleon looking for home" so I contacted the poster and he sent me photos.

Does this look healthy?
He said he thinks it's a veiled chameleon, but I've never seen a brown veiled chameleon before.is this normal color variation?also, he looks quite skinny.
Tell me what you think.

Looks loke a vield which grew up healthy and is now a bit on the skinny site. Also some skin is remaining from the last shed.
But no strong concerns

hey
i am not a chameleon expert like some people on here, but i do know quite a bit..in my opinion, that cham doesn't look too good to me..it looks really skinny and wrinkly..that cham. definitly needs to eat and drink more i think...if your looking for a high quality chameleon,go to www.chameleonsonly.com...they have top of the line chameleons ranging in prices from 80-300...i just wouldn't chance it if you were planning on maybe buying that one..it'd be too bad to buy a cham. and get it and find out its sick or unhealthy..check out pictures of my cham. on my link

He looks very thin (you can see his hip bones) which will say something about how he has been cared for. He may also be very old. In either case you would have some serious work to get him healthy and if he is old you may not have him long (if he is shipped, it will add stress to any current problems). He may also have parasites. Do you know how old he is? Why is the seller getting rid of him? Is he wild caught? How long has the seller had him?

His neck looks thin, too and then there seems to be a lump at his shoulder on front leg and some knobs at that same elbow. It could be the photo, but I personally would be hesitant to take on a chameleon in this condition. Do you have a lot of experience in chams? You would have to be sure that you have a good herp vet close by who knows chameleons (which you should do regardless of how you may obtain a cham).

the decision is yours, but if you are looking for a cham I would recommend buying from a reputable breeder (you can ask here for recommendations). If you are taking it on as a rescue you need to be really prepared and have experience - and that good herp vet

just my 2 cents,
lele

I have to agree with JohnnyBlaze and Lele...he just doesn't look very healthy. I see a too-thin cham with a bowed front leg. I see a knob at his shoulder which doesn't look good...either a sign of MBD or a sign of a cham undernourished.
I see the brown coloration. That could simply be a reaction to the camera, but I suspect it's more a sign of overall long-term poor health. Healthy adult Veileds and Panthers generally display their brightest colors when suddenly agitated, in defensive mode or sleeping; they generally don't turn brown.
To me he looks like a cham with possible MBD and/or long-term poor husbandry. I'm saddened to see that.

Thank you all for your opinions.
I think it's better for this chameleon to go to more experienced home.
I don'twant to get him and have him die on me in a week that's too sad.
