Shed Assist??

photojoe May 25, 2007 08:39 AM

So it seems like my bearded, now adult, does not want to shed all the way. It seems like just when he's finally got all the little spots here and there just about shedded off he's ready to start his next shed. Is this a sign of a vitamin deficiency?

I do soak him every once in a while (once a month) and spray him down pretty frequently (every few days... mines not a "drinker" usually. I spray him and he doesn't drink and just goes to bas to dry off. I think he gets his mouisture from the greens I give and pellets I guess)

But the spraying and baths don't really seem to affect the shed

when they get a little older they tend to shed by sections. So, the tail will shed...then maybe the head will shed a couple days later....then the rest of the body shed a few days after that.

I'm not sure if its a vitamin defficiency. In fact i'm not sure why they shed like that at all...but my guess(es) would have to do with a growth spert of either tail, head or body...or maybe a moisture issue....possibly the body has more moisture under the skin than the tail.

Scaled reptiles, in general, as they get older they don't need to shed as much since they're not growing. They normally only shed to replace old and worn scales or if they are healing from an injury(external), and sometimes due to external parasite like tick, fleas and mites. And since lizards don't shed their whole body at once like snakes that's why it comes off in sections at a time. It's nothing to worry about. Sounds like your doing everything fine. If your dragon's an adult the whole shed thing is nothing to worry about.
