Is the Trans-Pecos worth it this weekend

Erik - NM May 25, 2007 09:47 AM

I've been checking the weather and pretty much from Alpine, Ft Davis, Sanderson to Del Rio looks like rain and wet weather. Flash Flood watches and warnings for a lot of the places I planned on hunting. I typically don't have much luck in Texas and am worried the bad weather will make this a trip better spent in western NM/eastern AZ. What say you?

I don't know about Val Verde, but there should be PLENTY of good movement in any of the counties west of there. Likely you will be dodging showers but I wouldn't worry about it too much. Just watch the low water crossing - remember that time we saw the canyon fill up in southern Terrell?? "What is that noise? Sounds like a train!" hahaha

Erik - NM May 25, 2007 11:37 AM

Oh yeah, I remember that! What's a train doing out in the middle of nowhere?! First time in my life I've ever seen a flash flood.

Well I'm checking weather reports and temps seem to drop into the 60s when the sun goes down. I'm thinking I am going to plan a trip out there in two-three weeks instead. Sanderson is just 3 hours away so I can make it a weekend trip.

I think Max and I will make an impromptu trip to western NM for klaubs, pyros, cerbs, narrowhead garters, etc. Weather looks nice out that way.

Joe Forks May 25, 2007 11:45 AM

Nothing wrong with that plan.

I understand the pessimism below, but my guess is several folks will get lucky over the course of the next three days. Hard to say exactly where it will happen, but there are places aren't flooded and this upper level low will be hanging around until Monday or Tuesday.

I don't mind finding Frogs and Toads, or even Tiger Salamanders so I'm going out

Erik - NM May 25, 2007 12:25 PM

You know, I have a feeling when I get back I'm gonna see a post from you with all kinds of cool stuff. Then I'm gonna kick myself for not going! But yeah, my friend Max is originally from Abilene and hasn't seen a lot of the stuff further west, so I think it's our best bet to see stuff he hasn't seen if we head west. I'll be in alterna country in mid-late June for sure though. And probably more after that as well.

Joe Forks May 25, 2007 12:34 PM

No problem, I'll be out there with my family for a week the dark moon in June. Hook up with us then.

normnun May 25, 2007 12:58 PM

I'll prob. see you in marathon.Neet house ya got.

normnun May 25, 2007 12:56 PM

Well Joe I hope the next moon is a good one. These condition don,t allow for much movement but is fun seeing all the toads and in the morning seeing the box turtles.Hope you get a chance to stop by.Those who get to make the next moon will hopefully get to see a ton of movement.

Joe Forks May 25, 2007 01:03 PM

I'd like to stop by and see you, and Karl, and maybe pick-up some mouse if at all possible from Ray's operation. How about Dinner at the Longhorn one night? I'll buy if you and Karl wanna meet me there.

I've got some work to do out there so I have to make the trip. Besides I've been skunked on the best nights, so I certainly don't mind getting skunked on iffy nights

If you are in to Frogs and Toads, you probably couldn't ask for better conditions. Like I said earlier, a Tiger Salamander would be nice too.

normnun May 25, 2007 01:07 PM

The June moon is one of the better salamander nights and I can show you were unless you already know.I,m sure Karl and I will hook up w/u.

I found one September 05'. I still have it, awesome little dude! I had to do a double take because I passed it up and thought to myself, "what the heck was that?".

normnun May 25, 2007 01:29 PM

Erik:
I spoke with a friend in AZ who has hit the Huachucas, Chiricahuas, a few spots around Tucson. In the past 3 weeks he has seen multiples on Heloderma, Pyros, triaspis, tigris, klauberi, hognose. He has been mostly hiking the mts, but some raod cruising, such as Hopkins and Kitt.

DUDE...IT IS ALWAYS WORTH IT....YOU SUCKERS OUT WEST GET TO CHOOSE YOUR DAYS.......THIS SSSSSHHHITT AIN'T RIGHT

Joe Forks May 25, 2007 11:53 AM

Norm and John are telling everyone to stay home....

You know, I think I will have to change my mind and agree with them, everyone just stay home this weekend, there won't be anything moving.

July 19th, 1990 - Juno road is flooded The barricades are up and it's about 70 degrees F at dark. My brother and I are the only ones on the road. 64 degrees at midnight when we find the first alterna, a beautiful light phase blairs. Two hours and two bairdi later we find a male darkie with bright orange parked on the wet pavement at 60 degrees.

I have some other examples, but with gas at $3.00 a gallon I understand that some don't want to chance it.

normnun May 25, 2007 01:05 PM

Need to make sure everyone understands.I'm not telling anyone to stay home.I just gave a weather report. Now,if you want my honest opinion and you plan on coming out then I have to say there are several favorable condition right now and some not favorable.Example[favorable]rain and previous rain,non-scorched ground, most nights w/descent wind.[non-Fav]cooldays/cooler nights, lots of moon, too wet for now.

Joe Forks May 25, 2007 01:24 PM

I understand. There are NEVER any guarantees. Right now it is not even guaranteed I can make it out there on highway 90.
