"Harding hybrids"

biowarble May 25, 2007 10:31 AM

A few months ago we talked of hybrids between species, and Ken mentioned "Harding hybrids", a cross between wood turtles and Blanding's turtle.

Looking at the parental species, I would think they would not hybridize, with the very different characteristics of the carapace. I now have a pic, and am posting it for anyone who has not seen the hybrids.

Thanks for the info.

WEll, now that I've looked at more pics of the parent species on the web in a less biased manner, I think the parent species vary quite a bit in carapace features. Some Blanding's are as smooth as a spotted turtle, and at least a few wood turtles are not terribly bumpy.
