Which pacman should I get?

Voltron23 Aug 15, 2003 07:37 PM

Ok, I have a friend who breeds pacman frogs... I can either get an albino, or just the regular green one. I'm not sure if there is a difference in anything at all except for the color. I have a bunch of different types of tree frogs, and this would be my first actualy "land" frog... so any suggestions at all would be nice, such as: which one between albino and regular? What is a good temp? How often should I feed it? What should all go into the tank? Is a 10 gallon enough for it? How big should the water bowl be? Anything is appreciated, even if it is a care sheet or something... THANKS!!!

Ryan

its really a matter of personal preference. I really like the green ones, the red seems a little bland. Green seems to be my color of choise for a pacman. BUt theni got an albino for free,so no complaining out of me. They have a little green in them,i used to have a little albino baby, cutest thing ever. but my girl is 6 months and about 3 inches now(i assume it is a female becaus eof the size) and shes quite pretty. i like the albino, but green is better if you ask me. but its really up to you.

Well, if you want a caresheet, I suggest you search Google or Altavista.

If you want something really wild-colored, try getting an ornate horned frog rather than a cranwell. Ornates tend to have brighter and more varied colors than cranwells, which tend to be a bit drab brown and green. Most pet shops carry Cranwells, but you might have to order a real Ornata from an online breeder, like the ones in KS classifieds. Some ornates get really cool colors, like deep turquoise and even red and orange. Mine even has a bit of dark maroon/purple in the center of his spots. Here's a pic of mine, at the end of this post.
There's really no behavioral differences between the two types, that I ever noticed. I have a large albino femane Cranwell and a smaller male ornate, and both frogs show the same voracious appetite.

When I said I noticed no real difference between "the types," I meant between cranwells and ornates, not between regular colored frogs and albinos. Albinos of any species are more sensitive to bright light and more easily harmed by it. I think that honestly, my albino female tends to spend more time buried than my regular male, but then again it could just be personal frog preference. I think that if you want a more hardy-type frog since you're just beginning, I'd go with a "normal" one, not albino, to be safe.

Albinos tend to have more problems. Mine has always been more succeptible to disease and/or bacterial cysts. Others kept in the same conditions that are not albino have not shown any sign of anything abnormal. Personally, I do not like the morphs and I now stick to just natural phases. For care, go to my site listed below, the reptizone, and click on horned frog care. It should answer most of your questions. Also search the forum as people ask this same question sometimes 3 times a day (yikes!). Good luck. Andy

I agree with Andy, the albinos do tend to have more problems associated with their care. It is mainly because they are very inbred, and the reason for this is so the breeders can keep the albino gene there.

It's all up to you. I have to say that I like normals and albinos equally. I have a normal however. I would just put some thought into it, and decide what color you want to stick to, for years to come. If you choose the albino, decide if you are willing to give it the added care for its nice color. Good luck, and all I can say is that you think about it.
