question about eggs ?

dirtysouth May 25, 2007 09:39 PM

a few weeks ago i purchased a wild caught female eastern, after i had her for about a week i found a dud egg in the tank, that was 2 weeks ago , now i can feel about 5 more eggs that are developing inside her that wern't there before,is it likely that she would get that bad egg out first and then go on to produce fertile eggs? or is it more likley that these five will be duds as well? also about how long do the eggs normally take to grow inside before they are laid ? thanks

One of my females laid an infertile egg two days ago and I found 8 that look good this morning if that's any consolation; my other female laid 2 that look infertile and like you I'm hoping the better part of her clutch is still on the way ... but it's my first year trying to produce Hognose snakes, so those are only anecdotes. Let us know how it goes.

not sure what happened but found her dead this morning, there was more than the 5 eggs that i felt in her the first time, there was 11 eggs looks like they where all bunched up like she was trying to push them out and then died. so i cut the eggs out of her they look like they are good except for 2 that felt hard and 1 that was really small.i do hope that some hatch out for me.

eggs are dead.........any eggs not laid with the full clutch are usually always dead...any laid like a day late or a day early.....If she died..more than likely the eggs died when she did....

Yes keep them till you know for sure........they should turn wet and green and stink in a few days......

....good luck.......

note......a friend DID take eggs from turtles run over on the roads.....and did hatch a baby or so from them......but that female was killed and didn't die on her own accord........and not all hatched........

I have to disagree with part of that statement. I had a female lay one egg, the the rest of the clutch 48 hours later. The first egg did hatch. Actually turned out to be a great hatch, as it ended up a bicolor tricolor. There is no absolute when it comes to these animals.
