Florida River Cooter - Size Question

psugoran Aug 15, 2003 07:53 PM

I acquired a female (i think) florida river cooter and I am concerned about her size. She does not seem to be growing as quickly as my other turts. I have no prior experience with river cooters and I took this turt to help out someone who was over come with adoptions. I have had her/him for about 8 months. In this time I have seen NO growth. I hate to call him/her an it, but I don't know what sex it is. Whats the easiest way to tell with this speicies? It has been eating well. I have it on a rotating diet of gold fish, reptomin, anachorus, shrimp and earthworms and blood worms. It would sit and eat none stop all day if I let it. Please see the picture located at www.geocities.com/psugoran/turtles.html It is about 6.5" long and I believe it is atleast 3.5 or 4 yrs old. Any help would be great!

The picture didn't work, at that size gorwith would be quite slow from then on. What else do you have what is it kept in? As far as your diet they are HIGHLY and I mean HIGHLY herbivorous as adult which yours isn't but this a big juvi. 65% of it diet should be greens and water plants and 20% pellets and 15% percent other veggies fruits and animal matter.

I have an Eastern River Cooter. She is over 14 inches in SCL and HUGE plant eater. She likes Reptomin as well but since I have put her in my pond she (and a large redbelly cooter that came with her) have decimated all the water lettuce and butchered the water hyacinths. She will eat a bit of Krill too but love dandelion greens, chicory, escarole and will it eat all without stopping. The Florida River Cooter should eat the same way. The bulk of the diet is vegetable matter. (especially in adults -- younger specimens will take more animal protein.)
