To those that like water snakes....

coluberking25 May 26, 2007 01:37 PM

...I found two today. I was able to catch one(a VERY nice looking individual I may add)...but the other got away. This one has a very long slender tail so I believe this might be a female. I'll post pics up later today.

By the way this nice looking individual is nowhere near as nice when it comes to temperament. She was the first water snake ever (in only-He-knows-how-many-years) to bite me. Didn't really hurt. I washed it and there's some swelling and that's about it.

Hope these posts don't annoy. I just think you guys here would appreciate these little stories more than the people in the Water Snake forum.

Here's a water snake from a few years ago for you guys to enjoy for now.

When I was young ( pre teens ). I remember thinking that Northern Water snakes did not belong in the genus Natrix, they are not anything like the European Grass Snakes...did not know the term "morphology" at the time, but based my opinion on the difference in "body types" , NOW, I call that being a " little Reptile Geek" , I also walked around with Books written by Ditmars, quoting it, like it was the scripture, lol

Common snapper. Chelydra serpentina serpentina. It translates into "snake-like swamp thing." Snappers aren't snake like at all! Yea they got long necks...but when they stretch them out I don't even think it looks anything like a snake!!!

Maybe we should just start calling the N. black racer Coluber nigra nigra(nigra is latin for black right?) or something and hope people will catch on.

Congrats on the find - I live fairly far north - so I was very happy to find a toad today (pic posted in today's finds post)

Don't worry about being biten. I feel lucky as I was only bitten once by one of my new spotted pythons, and they are a very calm snake.

...those are spotted pythons. They're generally tame.

These are northern water snakes. They are VERY agressive when caught. Once grabbed...they thrash wildly and even do a roll similar to a crocodilian's death roll. They also bite anything that moves and are smart enough to bite the hand that dangles them by the tail.

Now tell me which is worse? lol

Tonight the new girls (spotted pythons) seemed a bit more calm. The one nick-named real [bleep] did bite for no reason. I was holding her, and then just all of sudden she tensed up and bit me. There was no noise or movements around her. The good news is that she is small enough - it does not hurt. It is much better than the 20 bite's I got the day after I got her.
