miklo May 26, 2007 03:13 PM

My U ocelleta ocelleta female laid one egg today, the thing is thats she has more eggs but hasn`t laid them yet. How long does it normally take for them to lay all the eggs? She did not lay the egg in her nest box. So i`m i bit worried that she will have problems whit the other eggs. Now she`s a aslepp. Thankfull for all the help I can get, this is the first time for me and her.
I apologize for my bad english, live in sweden

I`we read that the female will dig for days before deposition. My female started to dig this saturday and deposit her first egg a few minutes after that. After that nothing, why did she deposit one egg so fast and why not the rest.
Thankfull for ANY help I can get

I'm afraid I don't have the experience to give you much help. My Saharan female has laid eggs twice, and both times, it was all within hours. My only suggestion would be to call or to get her to a vet to determine if she needs intervention.

And as a side note, I would not have realized you were not a native English speaker if you hadn't mentioned it.

It's not unusual for a female to lay an egg (often a dud)
a day or too early. I would keep an eye on her actions
and see that she remains bright, alert and responsive
(BAR). She should continue digging more and more
till she finally deposits the rest of her eggs. I've also had
females lay a late egg or two up to a week later which is
a little more unusual than one early egg.

If you think there may be a chance that she's having a
problem and may have retained eggs in her, I would
think that a vet visit for some oxytocin/calcium injections
would be in good order so as to induce labor so to speak.
Of course that's up to you as we can't make that decision
for you. I've done this with good success on a couple of
females and on other occasions, it was non effective and
the female would either have to go through a very expensive
surgery (possibly rendering them non reproductive) or
eventually they would fail from being "eggbound".

Let's hope she lays her clutch soon for you,
John

First of all, thank you both for your answers. A little update, tomorrow i`m taking her to the wet. She is still BAR as you John called it, but she is not diggin anymore. She hasn`t digged for couple of days know. It`s like she is done, but she has several eggs still in her.
