Off Topic. EASY Snake hunting, with PICs

Jeff Clark May 26, 2007 07:06 PM

I caught two Southern Copperheads without even leaving the yard today. We have had extremely dry weather and the snakes seem to be hanging out around watered yards. One of these was perched on some dead magnolia leaves stuck in an azalea bush and the other was hiding, but not very well under a couple of magnolia leaves on my deck.

Nice post Jeff and how was their temperments? You plan on keeping them for a little while and domesticating those bad buys but I think you don't want to keep hot herps which I can't blame you but thanks for sharing and it almost looks like a funny saddled hypo bci in the brush btw or at least to me at a quick glance

If you guys think Gabbys are hot.. Check out the Bitis nasicornis (rhino viper) - Close relative of the gaboon.. but very nice..

Here is a photo of a gabby I took.. (not my animal, lives at a zoo).

and here is a couple pics of some rhino vipers (NOT MY PHOTOS, nor are they my animals.. I swipped them from google )

Tim that gabby looks like a frog lol. I have seen quite a few pics of the r. vipers but those two take the cake easily especially the bottom one- it is drop dead gorgeous for real

Congrats on the find - I never thought that copperheads were such nice looking snakes - but these look good.

I have found only one snake in my yard (in 8 years) - a little hog nosed that tried to bite the tire on my lawn tractor. I live too far north....

Scott,
...Easy to find and real easy to pick up with a small snake stick or even easier with extra long forceps. They seem to be genetically programmed to sit tight like they think they are totally camouflaged.

You make a very valid point. I have seen many videos on Youtube of people herping and when they come upon copperheads and pick them up with their bare hands, the snakes really just act like regular colubrids....trying to get away and not trying to bite. The water snakes I've been recently handling are much much much more agressive than these deadly beauties it seems.

Jeff had to travel, didn't have to leave his Yard. BTW, I strongly suggest you do not free handle any venomous snakes, I actually know someone that got bit by a copperhead because of such stupidity, not as "harmless" as some believe. Although the person came no where close to death, let's just say his hand doesn't not work as well as it used to, humm, come to think of it, it no longer works at all, almost forgot, someone shot him to death in Louisiana a few years back, well, he won't be doing anything stupid like that any more.

Copperheads can have bad attitudes and will often strike and bite. Their bite though not often deadly can cause serious tissue damage.

Nice finds Jeff!! Those guys must really be thick down there to find 2 in your yard in the same day..

How are the rattlers down your way?

Tim,
...Eastern Diamondbacks have declined to the point where have not seen one in a couple years. I do see several Canebrakes DOR every year.

Looking snakes. Although I agree, not easy snake hunting when dealing with hots. Only snake I've ever found in my yard was a gopher snake. I do have salamanders I find every year in the wet spring months.

Beautiful serpents! The only venomous snake we have in Minnesota in any quantity is the timber rattlesnake, and that is confined to the Southern edge of the state, along the Mississippi. (Not that I'm complaining!) LOL.

On the other hand, I wish there were snake lying around MY yard, waiting to be picked up! I haven't seen any in my yard since I was a kid, but then the cities have gotten a lot more developed since then...

My mom sent me a picture of a Bull Snake that she found on her front porch the other day. She lives just north of the cities, in Zimmerman. So, they are around.... perhaps you'll see something this year!

Cool! I hope your mom likes snakes!
I was going to say maybe she has more wooded/wild areas close to her house, but then I had to rethink that, because we've had flocks of wild turkeys, pheasants, red fox, various hawks, woodchucks, raccoons and possums (not to mention smaller mammals such as squirrels, rabbits, mice, moles, chipmunks, etc. which attract the hawks) in our yard, as well as huge bucks crashing through the yard right next door (no bear or moose though). This is probably due to the golf course across the street and the other one just down the block, as well as the U of M farm fields---all on our street (Cleveland) which looks more rural than an inner-ring suburb abutting the city limits should!
I would LOVE to see a snake, though...
