3 season tort house

mythreetorts May 26, 2007 08:02 PM

here are a couple of new pics of the tortoise house I built.
as you can see they have plenty of room. there is a concrete pool inside and out side, I have seeded the entire floor inside and all of the area outside with tortoise mix seeds and some different grass seeds. I have opuntia cactis and Hybiscus plants growing in the enclosure with them. they have free acces to the ouside as long as the weather is good.(there is a steel blade/gate that I drop threw the tunnel to keep them inside at night) It took them about 20 minutes to find the outside and now I see them wondering at will from inside to out. they like to go outside and bask in the sun then they will crawl into one of the hiding spots outside between grazing. it is awsome and most of the materials I found at the dump or had left over from odd jobs.
I also made a stand for a water barrel that collect the water from the roof and I use that to water and fill the pools daily.
recycled water, recycled materials, and what a fantastic life for a tortoise in new england.
let me know if anyone would like to chat about how I made this. I still need to paint the outside frame work and get the grass to grow but so far the four torts I have are loving it. I think I'll have to go shopping at the NY reptile show in July!!!

Excellent! Those are some lucky tortoises to be living that large!

My only suggestion is to make the fencing opaque. It's been my experience that if a tortoise can see through it, it will spend too much time & energy trying to get through it.

point taken I figured the fence I put up this year will only last a year before my sulcata is big enough to push it over. he is about 8 inches now but is already pretty strong.
thanks for the compliment.
