Question about Fruits/Veggies

mastiffgrrl May 26, 2007 09:12 PM

Okay. I would like to start providing "freshies" for my 3-4 month old veiled cham. He is munching on the african violet in there, so I think he might be receptive now. My question is how to provide them.

Should I suspend it in a cup? He has always hunted his food, so he's not used to cup feeding. What has everybody else had luck with? I am going to try and pick up some of the cage clips at the show tomorrow to hang romaine lettuce and dandelion from, but I'd love to hear any ideas and experiences you all have had.

Thanks so much!

My veileds usually just ran for what ever i placed in their cages but most of the time i just speared it onto a stick i had in their cages. When i feed Kale to them I usually just zipped it in zipper so it would hang down. I was successful at feeding bananas, strawberries, kale, spinach, orchids and dandelions.

Thanks Brian, I will try that out! I don't know if I can convince my mom to give me her orchid blossoms though.... (no, I don't live at home, but I don't have orchid blossoms either!)

Orchids went over very well. Fortunately I managed a grocery store at the time where I was able to order organic orchid blossoms in the produce department. Your local store may be able to do the same.

I've given my veileds greens (dandelion, kale, collards, endive, ROMAINE lettcue, mustard greens, etc.) and veggies (carrot, sweet potato, zucchini, squash, sweet red pepper, etc.) and a little bit of fruit (apples, pears, melon, berries, etc.). My females also eat the leaves of the pothos plants in their cages while the males only nibble at them.

I usually just place a small container with the salad in it on the potted plant in my Veileds cages. They all know its there and go down to look for it. I would recommend fresh greens such as mustards, collards, turnips and dandelions along with some slivered acorn or butternut squash. Some sort of fruit like mango, papaya and berries are also relished. They seem to like strawberries and raspberries best. Your male may be a little young for the greens yet but he would enjoy edible flowers such as pansies, nasteriums, petunias or hisbiscus along with the fruit. My older Veileds all seem to prefer the salad to insects.
