First Water Snake Speciman

coluberking25 May 27, 2007 12:07 AM

Here's the snake I caught that was in shed. The tails are much too dark to look at for pattern so I've started looking at the pattern on the scales under the neck(the first 6 or so starting where the head ends).

This is the second northern water snake I captured. You really can't tell in the pics(stupid photo gallery making me have to crop them down causing much of the body to get cut off in what is now on this site a head shot) but this is the nicest looking northern water snake I have ever seen or captured. It was a pain to catch. It spotted me and darted out to a bunch of lily pads and sat there for like 10 minutes. After ten minutes or so I took a rock and threw it behind the snake. The ripples spooked it and caused it to swim back to shore. I chased it about 12 feet before finally being able to grab it....and then have it able to grab me lol. Note how the shape of the pattern on the scales is different than that of the first speciman.

Cool find....that is a pretty snake. I've never been able to catch water snakes. Whenever I see them.... they've already spotted me and are halfway accross the pond.

...either run like hell after them....or move VERY VERY SLOWLY. You gotta move like a chameleon....move every couple feet then pause and sway with the breeze. Yes you'll look like a complete idiot....but it works.

Serpentine! Run at them in a serpentine pattern!
(I hope you're seen "The In-Laws"

By the way, nice photos of your catches! I've only seen one water snake in my entire life (in the wild, that is).
