Should I give up?

losgan May 27, 2007 08:52 AM

Over 2 months ago, my very young Pueblan milk escaped. I live on the 5th floor of a very old apartment building.

Especially now that the weather is warm (Massachusetts) I'm thinking I'm not going to see her again.

I worry about getting another snake ... because then what will I do if she decides to show up?

Then you'll have two snakes.

I wouldn't give up. Anyone that's kept enough snakes for enough time will have an escapee. Sometimes they're gone for good, sometimes not. I have a friend who's fully grown corn snake escaped in her upstairs bedroom and showed back up 4 months later in her downstairs living room.

Like SkyChimp said, then you will have two snakes. It happends to the best of every herper. You love snakes right? So why call it quits? Live and learn, that's part of the enjoyment of having snakes.

I lost a baby cali (who had never even fed for the first time) in my 5th floor apartment in boston. A neighbor found it in the basement of the building 2 months later. I have been keeping snakes for 15 years and I have had three escapes. The first two I got back within 3 months, the third is a juvi corn snake that is still on the run after 6 months. I am moving next month, so I am still hoping for a miracle. That would be the first snake I have ever actually lost.

The best advise I can give you is to tell all your neighbors below you. Its embarasing and many people will probably be freaked out by it, but if they find it they might call you instead of hit it with a pan. When snakes get into the walls etc in apartments they usually end up traveling down.

Yeah - I let the people next to me and the ones below me know. They aren't very happy with me, ha ha. More than once I heard "Why can't you just keep a fish??"

I definitely learned my lesson though. Her enclosure now has weather-stripping around the edges. It really seemed like there was no way she could get out ... squishy little booger!

To me it is less disturbing that there is a snake loose in the apartment and more disturbing that she hasn't had to come back looking for food!

there isn't an apartment building in the world that doesn't have some snake food floating around.

I had a small speckled king about 10 years ago. It escaped and was missing for 3-4 months when we finally moved to a new house. I wrote him off but found him another 3 months later in the new house!! He must have hidden in some items that we packed and made the journey to the new house without my knowing it!! He was a little bigger as well so he must have found food somewhere (we lived across from a lumber yard so mice/pinks where available).

Years ago I lost a 4-5month old Honduran milk snake (I live on the 3rd floor of an apt. building)... she stayed missing your months (over 6 months), one night my upstairs neighbor who lives directly above me, starts banging on my door telling me she has a snake in her tub! I go up there and surely it's my Milk snake!

Lost a Louisiana Milk snake... was gone for years! it was found in the building right next to mine in someone's closet!

Lost an `06 Specked King snake last year (super tiny), the next morning I went to throw out the trash and it was outside right by the trash!

** note: I say "lost" but I mean they escaped somehow **

all that being said ... i'll sum it up with " ya never know"
