About a week ago, I switched half my snakes to compressed coconut husk bedding to try it out. Thought it was doing a good job, no one seemed to be having any issues, until Periscope shed last night.
I honestly have no idea what happened. Her right side of her nose is kind of...mushed in. When I noticed it I checked her mouth out and took out a small speck of substrate that seemed stuck in her gumline. There was some bubbling on that side of her mouth, but I'm looking at her now and she doesn't seem to have bubbles in her mouth anymore. She ate normally on Thursday, even though she was blue, and has otherwise been acting normally.
Basic stats - cool side is 79, warm side is 87. She's back on papertowel now, in a 32qt sterlite tub.

Anyway, any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm going to be keeping an eye on her and if anything seems off I'll take her to the vet. It doesn't seem to be bothering her any, but it's still disconcerting to see your snake's mouth misshapen.

I'm not sure, but from what i'm read, she doesnt follow some of the "rules" for a yellow belly. But i'm not an expert so I don't know. Good luck.

Looks like you got a bit of swelling or possible abscess - hard to tell from the pictures. It should go away on its own - of course monitor her and keep an eye on the area keep it clean - especially check after feedings to be sure the area is not re injured. If you happen to have antibiotics laying around you may want to dose her just to help her stave off the infection.

Hi Jin.!! Like Tosha Said and I would add That it more than likely was not caused by the substrate and if it was it would have been a freak thing. And no its not a yellow belly but is a lovely snake. Thanks David of DS Reptile Rescue

I'm gonna double check her mouth in the morning after she's had all night on the papertowel that she's used to.

And I know she's not a yellowbelly, it was a joke 'cause of all the yb posts lately. There's a JK under the picture.

I took her out to look at her one more time before bed and looked real close at her nose. It doesn't seem swollen, and I was about to slip my tweezers under her lip to take a peek in there when I noticed that the side of her nose that looks mushed in didn't quite look right. Looking at it closer, she has a cut right from the bottom of one of her heat pits down to her lip.
You can't really see it in the pictures (I tried) but right where the lip is the most smushed in, is the heat pit with the cut at the bottom. I put a bit of neosporin on it to make sure it doesn't get infected, but the cut seems clean so by next shed I figure it should heal up.
