Uro Garden

in2deep May 27, 2007 07:50 PM

Since I asked a some questions about uro gardens previously, I thought I'd share a photo of my Uro garden. I live in an apartment, so everything is growing in pots on my porch.
The photo's not the greatest but...
I have (# of plants, plant type):
4 Portulaca
3 Lavender - from the herb section, not the landscape section
3 Nasturtium
2 Dandelion - by far the favorite
1 Violet
4 Viola
2 Hibiscus - they look a little sad right now, got left out in the cold overnight and dropped a bunch of leaves
2 Tomato plants - NOT for uro consumption
Not shown is the catnip plant - mostly for the cats, but will try feeding some to my uro to see if he likes it

What part of the lavender do you feed? I've never heard of that as a food for uros.

thanks,
Craigo

Don't know if he likes the lavender yet as I haven't tried it...

The lavender is an herb in the mint family. Both fresh leaves and flowers are edible. If you're eating them, they need to be used sparingly as they tend to be very overpowering.

We also have a garden where we grow food for our little guy. You should try starting a small lettus patch in a long window box. You can grow chard, bok, and romaine in the same box and make salads for both you and your lizard. Plus, planting the lettus close together keeps them from growing too big and becomming overwhelming.

That's a great little garden you have going there. We have a nice big veggie garden, about 25' x 40', that we grow all kinds of stuff in. Since it was my daughter that wanted our new Uro so badly, I got seeds and had her plant a bunch of things that we normally wouldn't grow, like bok choy, endive, alfalfa, etc. We also grow roses, nasturtiums, hibiscus, pansies, etc. that we can feed him. I never in a million years thought I'd actually be planting dandelions, but I have some seeds to be planted so I can have a steady supply of greens and flowers. I garden organically, so I know everything in my yard that is edible is safe for him to eat.

The way I see it, I'm turning the whole thing into a learning experience for my daughter, both in helping to take care of Gizmo as well as learning how to grow food for him. I have a greenhouse, so I'll be able to supply food for him year-round.

Good luck with all of your planters, it looks like it's going to be a great garden for your back porch, both pretty and serving a good purpose for your Uro
