Sick Gecko

JustAMom May 27, 2007 10:57 PM

Ok - husband says no to the vet. I purchased Repta-Aid and administered slowly and in small amounts. He threw it all up. Temps are still 80-95 on warm side, has calcium in small dish, fresh water, 2 hides, all the items that are essential, etc. Have tried mealworms - will not eat, waxworms - ate a few by hand and threw them up, crickets. Rarely eats and when he does -has watery stools. He hates to be picked up and just seems miserable. At this point I'm thinking he needs to go to a rescue if I can't figure out how to help him. Any advice would help.

kelly hammock, the owner of HISSS @ www.hisss.net lives in fort worth. she may know a good vet. maybe you could try writing her an email or give her a phone call. her contact info is on her website. you sound like you are in a tuff spot. your little one may have parasites and a vet visit will be needed for sure. it wont be cheap but here in so. cali it would probably be around 150 or a little less. i would try feeding him/her some vanilla ensure for now with an eye dropper. if you drop on his nose just wait till he/she licks it off. just like a syringe full twice a day for now until you can figure out what is wrong. it has several vitamins and calcium in it so it would be good. i cant think of anything else though because i dont live out there and cant see your gecko.

Your gecko probably has either parasites or a virus. How old is it and how much does it weigh? Also how long has it been sick? I went through the same thing a couple of months ago with two of my girls but I was able to take them to the vet. He gave me some Panacur for worms and Baytril (broad spectrum antibiotic) and it's working wonders! How much Repta Aid are you giving at each feeding? It may be too sick to take very much, I tried to feed Halo too much because I was frantic that she was so emaciated and ended up losing her. But with Star, she's just as thin but I went much slower with her in the feedings and she's doing SO much better now. If your husband refuses to let you take your gecko to the vet it will probably die, hate to tell you that but it has to have medicine to get well. I live north of Dallas, I can see if my vet will give me some extra medicine to send to you or if you want to go with a rescue I could try to get it well for you. (I have 10 geckos and eggs incubating, do rescues when I can). Let me know on the size and weight, also what it's tail looks like; fatter or thin, whatever. Does it drink water at all? Let me know what you can about it and I'll try to help you with the sick little one. Fran

Update: Gecky is in really bad shape. I have contacted a rescue and have not heard back just yet. After the Repti-Aid tried baby food (turkey and chicken)and he is able to take very small amounts by licking but seems too weak to even try. I have never seen a gecko as skinny and frail looking as ours. He must truly be miserable. If you know of any rescues in Fort Worth or anyone else who might be of help I would greatly appreciate the information.

Here is a website I found that lists a lot of vets, should all be reptile vets. http://www.herpvetconnection.com/texas.shtml

I hope this helps, I faught to save two of my leos who were in the same condition and know exactly how hard it is to see them in that condition. Best of luck to you sick little one, let me know how things go. Fran
