Just ordered 100 Dubia Roaches

eminart May 28, 2007 12:55 AM

I don't even have a bearded dragon yet, but I do have one leopard gecko. I have plans for at least a couple more geckos and a beardie. I thought I'd go ahead and try to get a roach colony started since I know it will take a while to reach a good level to feed from. Anyway, I got 100 assorted sizes for 25 bucks and free shipping. Anybody know of any better deals than that? It was the best I found, but I'm a roach newbie. I got the dubia's because I hate roaches. They can't climb and are supposedly a bit slower moving which will probably be good for my leo, because she's lazy and picky. Anyway, I guess don't have any real questions, except about the price. Any pointers would be great though. I plan to keep them in a tub with a UTH.

That actually isn't a bad deal but I'd look at FIREBALLDRAGONZ.COM for other roaches. Jason's got some great prices on BlATTA's (which don't climb) and Lobsters (which do climb, but are easily corraled) at 300 for 21.00 shipped. They are all fast breeders and the BLATTA's are allot smaller than DUBIA's and Lobster adults are about the same size as a adult cricket. I'd check them out. Are you going to breed them cuz that's the best way to go.

Yeah, the guy from FIREBALLDRAGONZ actually replied to this thread right after I made it, but apparently someone deleted his post. He does seem to have some good prices. I decided to go with the dubia's because of several combined reasons. They don't climb, which is nice, but not an absolute must. They're a little slower (I have a lazy leopard gecko). They get to a decent size which will be nice when I do get a beardie but I can still feed they nymphs to my leo's.

I'm sure any of the other species would have worked too, but I just thought the dubias would fit my needs the best. I'll be feeding several leopard geckos (eventually) and at least one bearded dragon. So, yes, I'll be breeding the roaches. I can't afford to buy feeders all the time. My ball python babies are about to make be bankrupt as it is. :D
