Val Verde Alterna pics!!

1st Male: Fri night, 11:13, air temp upper 60's, rock temp 77 (according to my PE-1). The only orange on his body is right there on his neck. The crazy thing is, this was my number one choice of phases that I wanted to find...

2nd Male (I think it's a male): Sun 9:10, air temp lower 70's, rock temp 77

Both were found off Dolan Creek Rd, and were a lot of work to find, but of course well worth it!!

Now here's how I ended up hunting that area... Thurs. afternoon, I set up camp at Devil's River. I headed out that night to hunt 277 and saw nothing after dark so headed to camp early. Well, then the monsoon-that-never-wanted-to-end came. I even slept in my truck that night because my GF was afraid the lightning would strike our tent! When I tried to head out for 277 again Fri, the road was closed and impossible to pass at Dry Devil's River. So I was trapped! I decided to look for areas off Dolan Creek Rd that I could hike to without being in the park and on private landa. Anyways, found some areas to hike, and a little after 11 came across that awesome alterna phase warming on a rock (my first WC GB, BTW!!!). He must have been hoping to get lucky that night because when I picked him up he spazzed out, everted his hemipenes (sp?), and glazed my hands with some of his man-musk! He was the only snake I found that night. After finding him, I decided to stay in that area for the rest of the weekend to see if I could find him a mate. On Sun, I found that small Blairs and also a Lep, which is another first for me! Obviously, it ended up being an awesome weekend for me. The funny thing is, I was real pissed about the weather and being trapped that first night. I cheered up real quick though Enjouy the pics and sorry for the long post and hand in the alterna pic...

I wish I could edit my post, it's land not landa and enjoy not enjouy. Yes, I know how to spell, just not type...

Awesome-I especially like the alterna. And very cool how you found them under much less than ideal conditions. kudos.

Very nice! The only time I've been on that road was when me and my friend made one 5-mile-or-so pass and we got a flat tire on his brand new tires. We fixed it with fix-a-flat good enough to finish the night and we forgot all about it when we caught a nice alterna phase by the south picnic area. We also watched a medium Blair's phase for 45 minutes that never came within reach on the big cuts south of Loma. Later that night Shawn Mosley and his partner caught it. It turned out to be an adult female and they also caught a screaming light phase Blair's male a few hours later on the same cut that was apparently trailing it.

Well, it was more like serious hiking through treacherous washes and up rocky slopes...but yah, both of them were found that way...
