enclosure lid question..

Shadow4108 May 28, 2007 10:28 PM

I have a 10 gallon with a sliding screen lid.. Is the lid really needed? My gecko is never seen trying to get out or anything. I don't have cats and my kids can't reach into it or reach the set up. I have always thought that the lid was more to keep things out than keep geckos in, is this right??

No, I don't think they can climb out; it's more of keeping unwanted hands and other pets out, but I do keep a lid on my geckos' cage just incase.

the lid'll help keep alot of the heat in, as they need slighty warmer temps than us, and think about the food it'll be eating...NOW you'll want a lid on :P

That, and it depends on how your enclosure is set up - if you have anything in there for the gecko to climb on, you might have an issue with them getting out if you discontinue using the lid. If nothing to climb on, you probably don't have an issue, but is it really that inconvenient to be safe rather than sorry?

My gecko can jump about halfway up his 20g. If he decided to do so from one of his hiding spots, he could deffinately make it out. Keep that in mind.

Since when do screen lids help keep heat in? Cheers, Lance

You would be surprised to know that they do in fact keep some heat in. I have a digital term and when i am feeding, cleaning the tank and open up the screen the temp will drop by 3 or 4F. Check it yourself and you will see.
