Perlite is very commonly used, as is vermiculite. Eggs can be hatched on a variety of substrates, including moist paper towels and no substrate at all, suspended above water on a mesh tray. The moral of the story is don't get hung up on incubation substrate.

If using an incubator, eggs should be kept in the low 80s. Higher temperatures can cause death and deformities. If incubation in the takes place 80s and a spike in temperature occurs (heat wave), you could get deformed babies (usually this is expressed with kinked spines). Many of the cheaper incubators do not have a cooling mechanism.

Depending on where you live and your house temperature, you may be better off just setting the eggs up on a shelf and letting them incubate at room temperature.
