off-topic, for golfdiva: salamanders?

biowarble May 29, 2007 12:33 PM

Golfdiva.... I "herped" with turtles and frogs and toads - seen them in the wild. But I've never seen a salamander in the "wild". Do you know of any place near where we live where you can find salamanders? I was thinking of Aman Park (in Ottawa County) but I can't get there because I don't have a car.... course maybe I can get the GVSU bus that runs between downtown and Allendale to stop there

Sorry bio, I haven't been ignoring you, I just haven't been around for a little bit!

Anyway, yes, I know where you can see salamanders...my front yard! lol! They really are all over, they are just very shy, so you have to be quick. Look for large, partially rotted logs, that are buried an inch or two. Turn it over quickly and don't blink while your doing it! Look closely too, cause they can blend in with the dirt well. This wet weather is a good time to go looking too!

Oh, and be sure to replace the log as you found it when you're done! You don't want to destroy those mini ecosystems!

Have fun!

Didn't think you were ignoring me, figured you hadn't been in the forum for a while.

Any parks or other wooded areas to suggest besides your front yard ?

Interesting that they move so fast despite being ectotherms....

hmmm...I was just over by you, geocaching in some of those Wyoming parks. Is Ideal Park the one where you drive south for a couple of blocks to get in the enterance? The north end it wooded. That seems like a likely place. Any park that isn't well manicured, in other words, there is fallen, rotting logs laying around, especially in cooler shaded areas. Our soil is sandy and well drained, I don't know if that is preference.

Let me know if you find any. Otherwise you will have to come and look under our wood piles! lol!

"geocaching"? What does that mean?

golfdiva Jun 13, 2007 12:04 AM

Someone hides a cache (a box with a journal to log your visit and maybe some trade for items) and puts the gps coordinates online. Then someone like me downloads the coordinates and finds the cache. I sign the log book and maybe trade for an item. I then log my find online, and that is all there is to it!
