enclosure size for gravid females?

forkit May 29, 2007 02:04 PM

I am looking at pre-made racks, would 30 Quart tubs be sufficient for gravid adult BPs? the dimensions are: 16" wide x 23 1/4" deep x 4 " tall

or would 37 quart be more reasonable? dimensions: 17 3/4" wide x 33 1/2" deep x 5 1/4" tall.

? I am trying to properly house happy BPs and at the same time save us much room and money as possible.

The rack I used last year had 32 qt tubs. Both my 2000 gram females fit comfortably in there.

how much does height matter? b/c with the particular racks I'm looking at, the floor space is about the same, 30 qt. is 4 inches tall and 32 is 6 inches tall. will height matter or is mostly about floor space?

or am I just being obsessive?

Up to this point 32 quart tubs have worked out just fine, but I have a 4500 gram female that is ready to drop any day. I have her in a Vision rack which is plenty large enough for her. My concern like yours is will she just keep working her eggs into a larger circle or will she compress herself and eggs against the top of the tub. I have had many BPs lay their eggs in 32 quart tubs with no issues.

I will keep you informed of how things turn out.
