Best way to switch from mice to rats ???

laanxx99 May 29, 2007 11:23 PM

Does anyone havea good way of switching a BP from mice to rats? I have a python that is simply getting too big for adult mice. I would love to feed it the larger rats but it is completely uninterested in them. I only feed f/t animals but I have been known to shake the prey with tongs for a bit if necessary. It is not done for the python as it usually takes it's food without any motivation. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

Scent the rat with a mouse.

I had a problem female who fed mice only. So I took a small rat, put it in a small box with about three mice. Left them together for a couple hours, placed the rat in the females cage and whamo! Now she feeds on non-scented rats with no problem.

to switch mine I put the f/t in a small cloth bag with some soiled mouse bedding/shavings from a local pet shop. Mice smell stronger so that is how I think the smell matters. Give that a shot and then warm the rat uunder a heat lamp once thawed. Try to get the rat around its natural body heat.
