I've never been to the gap before and had a few questions.
Do you still need the permit to collect here?
and
Are there cuts to shine here or do you just blacktop for the herps?
Thanks

There are cuts, but the road is good too
You just need a hunting license as long as you stay on the state road and out of the actual WMA.

there are cuts, but most of them are rather unproductive - I usually only shine in sections. Of the 5 alterna that I've found there, only one was on a cut, and it wasn't deliberately shined (I had backed up for a stick and my buddy spotted it in my driving lights on the dirt cut). I mostly cruise the gap, as its a narrow, windy road. If there are any other herpers, slowing to spotlight the few cuts that are there is liable to get you jammed up in traffic.

The only cuts on FM 2627 I've bothered to shine are at the crest of a short hill a few miles SE of the turnoff. Last October one pass towards La Linda at about 10 PM yielded 3 atrox and 2 blacktails, pretty good for a 3/4 moon.
