OBX King

Tony D May 30, 2007 10:46 AM

Since things have been a little heavy around here lately I thought I'd try to lighten them up a little. This is an old pic but we've had a bit of a crew change since I last posted it. It was taken spring of 2004 while camping on Hatteras Island. Can't believe how much the kids have grown since! Anyway Jesse, the one holding the snake, has taken quite a shine to snakes in general and snake hunting specifically. This year, at the ripe age of 6.5, on his own, he has found and captured two easterns. The first, from a soon to be construction site, was removed and I noted last night that she is full of eggs! A couple of days after he caught her, he took her to school for a show and tell and from what I hear he did a bang up job of it covering aspects like habitat, pattern / camouflage, what they eat, smelling with the tongue, fixed eyelids, shedding and to the teacher’s chagrin where its privates are! Anyway it’s good to see another generation catching the fever.

No she's a Currituck animal but she does have a significant amount of interband speckling. Actually I've found several OBX kings that have had less speckling than this girl.

Neat pic, we have cotton mouths come into the yard pretty frequently but Jesse has never been around when one shows up. Till I can demonstrate the difference I'll remain a bit nervous about raising a snake loving kid in moccasin heaven!

Teach them that necessary respect level and all will be well.

Wow those are super! I like the ones with lots of speckling but where the eastern pattern is still appearent. Most I find in the wild don't look that good. I think the really good one might be a bit harder to spot. Surprisingly, even one with half that amount of speckling is hard to spot after its dashed into the vegitation.

Nice Outer Banks!

They are one of my favorites. Here is one of my males. I was also given a Bartlett striped male as a gift from a good buddy a couple of years ago, he really turned into a light hypo-ish beast. I'll try to post a pic of that boy when I get home. Thanks.

This is a very old wild collected girl, unrelated to the other captive lines.

Awesome looking snake. I have a female that looks just like that. The male I got with her is pretty plain. Hopefully by next year she'll be breedable along with the Okeetees and I'll FINALLY have some babies to sell for once.
Thanx for sharing. Again, great snakes!

I got them from a good friend of mine Peter Jolles. They were his holdbacks from '04.

you can almost never go wrong when a breeder liquidates!

nice colored animlas that you do not usually see elsewhere also.
Check out the box turtle my wife and I came across in 2005. I received tons of emails about this one from the box turtle guys. My wife found him while jogging and brought him back to the house where he was photo'd and then released exactly where she found him only minutes before. I've never seen one since (or before for that matter) that had such bright colors.

I remember when you posted that pic, I was envious! I did a very brief bit of hunting on Ocracoke but struck out. Always have planned to get back to that area.
You still in coastal NC? How's things in that neck of the woods? Any of the good flippin spots survive the bulldozers?

Tony D Jun 01, 2007 07:31 AM

Still in coastal Carolina. Man I haven't heard from you on the boards for awhile! How have you been? Get any good fishing in last season? Though the Chesapeake Bay and ocean fishing was excellent last year we had a very weak striper season in the Carolina rivers and sounds. I only caught three over the min size limit.
