green asian pit viper ID ?

evil-elvis May 30, 2007 11:15 AM

I aquired the animal in the attached pics as a CB neonate in a trade about a year ago, it was supposed to be a female Popeia Popeiorum. I am fairly sure this ID is not correct, but I am not 100% confident I know what it is. I would appreciate any and all educated guesses.
Thanks in advance
Ryan

Looks like Trimeresurus/Cryptelytrops albolabris to me - in particular, the first supralabial and nasal appear tobe fused, which is the biggest giveaway.

A common misconception, unfortunately - a huge number of "Pope's" in the trade are actually albolabris.

Cheers,

WW

Thanks WW,
The conclusion I came to is that it is a male albolabris, not a female Popes. I wanted to see what some more experienced people thought.
You are certainly correct about people misidentifing these snakes when offering them for sale, I purchased/traded for five different individual snakes(all neonate green pitvipers) over the course of several months from different breeders/dealers all of them well known and respected venomous dealers, of the five only two of them were properly identified as to species and sex. In all fairness looking at the animal when its a month or two old vs a year old makes a difference and these can be difficult without being sure of where they originated from.
Thank You again,
Ryan Mccullah
