keeping 2 dragons..1 cage...

keith_ecko May 30, 2007 05:04 PM

Well I just ordered my second baby from the dachiu's today and I know I will want one nice sized enclosure to keep both of them in. They are both females. Can someone let me know or she me pics of there cages and what dimensions would be best for when they are both adults. I don't want a minimum sized cage, nor do I want something gigantic. I let my other dragon free roam for a lil bit during the day while I was home to check stuff out and stretch so that's why I don't want a huge cage because I will let them out to explore there surroundings...Pics would be great too! Thanks guys/gals!

personally I suggest separate cages, even with two females. There is no guarantee two females will get along, even if raised together. There are plenty of reasons not to house dragons together, stress, health issues, aggression, etc.

But if you are going to house them together I suggest a cage no smaller than 5'x2' of floor space. 5'x3' will give alot of room without being so huge you can't fit it into a living room. These of course are adult cages. As babies they can be kept in a 40 gal breeder or similar till they are about 12-15" long, then moved to the adult cage. OR housed in the adult cage but divide the cage in half and slowly increase space as they grow.

Yea the dimensions you gave me are what I was thinking about. Are the first dimensions the minimum even if you allow the dragons to free roam for a lil bit during the day in an safe room?

Free roaming will certainly ensure your dragon gets some exercise. I do feel 5'x2' floor space will be fine for two dragons as a minimum.

If you really want to go all out and hope to get more dragons in the future, you can always convert the entire 'safe' room into a dragon cage. a 10'x12' room can house quite a few dragons, including a couple males...as there is enough room for two males to stake out individual territories and females. Of course this means dealing with alot of eggs.

Its a real pity the man behind this website and the dragon house has since passed on.

This is a great setup to have Mercury vapor bulbs to provide UVB, though hanging fixtures would be necessary to get heat low enough. MVB weren't really around when he built this house.

For an existing room, a retaining wall or box built ontop of the floor would be necessary so moisture etc won't get into the floor below.

You should drive to the Dachiu's. I know it's far but it would be well worth it. You'd be amazed. All of their dragons are in breeding groups in 4 x 3 cages. And you can pick up your 2nd female and a mate while your there and save the shipping. lol.
