Our Greatest Litter Yet!

wetceal May 31, 2007 03:10 AM

Hello Everyone!

Well, this is definitely one of our MOST anticipated litters of the season! We have been eagerly anticipating this litter from before the breeding season even started and here it finally is!

We aquired our male Aztec from Bob and Andrew Potts back in 2005 and have been patiently growing him up. This season was the first time we tried breeding him and he courted enthusiastically with a couple of our girls. One of them was a female Salmon Hypo Boa.

After a few weeks, she ovulated and we started counting down the days. Mom swelled up full of babies and was HUGE! Honestly, I'm surprised she didn't give birth earlier being as big as she was.

I'm actually currently back in California visiting my parents and just flew out on Wednesday. I was hoping she would have the babies before I left so that I could see them and take pictures of them. Of course my plane left in the afternoon and she had them later on that evening!

I'm disappointed I didn't get to see them in person but I'll have plenty of opportunities to check them out when I get back! She ended up having 20 BIG, healthy babies and 4 slugs. Of the 20 babies, we ended up with 6.3 Normals, 2.2 Hypos, 0.1 Aztec, and 1.5 Hypo Aztecs!!!!! The total number of Aztecs was a little bit less than the odds but the number of Hypo Aztecs is fantastic!

Sean was able to take some photos of them which we wanted to share with everyone. From what I can see in the photos, the pattern on the Hypo Aztecs was not altered at all by the hypo gene like it is in Motleys. The coloration also just GLOWS! I think this is because of how deep colored the regular Aztecs are. The male Hypo Aztec is much darker looking than the females and there is one female in particular that is just amazing she almost has a T Positive look to her!

The normals and Hypos in the litter are also spectacular looking! All three normal females have cool circle-back ladder-tail patterns and the Hypos are exceptionally clean patterned and high colored.

We couldn't be happier with the outcome of this litter and I can't wait to get back and see them in person! Unfortunately, I'll have to wait a few weeks before I'll be able to do that!

Here are the photos of them...

Here she is again!

Check out those tails!!

And a normal with a regular Hypo - not too looking bad either!

I'm exhausted and jet lagged so I'm off to bed!

Thanks for looking!

That is so awesome Celia! Those Salmon Aztecs are so hot! As several have said already, the potential to cross those into other projects just got better knowing the pattern will hold true! The Sunglow versions of the Aztec should prove to be so amazing! Congrats to both of you! Have fun on your VC!

John

I really think you only have a glimpse of what they are going to look like. Given that aztecs lose their baby color and gain a deep red with age.

The females have the same colors as T Nics.

Really excites me about the Hypo Leopard, since the Aztec has kind of Leopard pattern in its patterned areas. (Celia you'll know what I mean with the "controlled choas"

Well now back to my website to post the new morph!

It is cool how the Aztec pattern did not appear to be affected by the Hypo gene in respects to distorting the pattern. Those guys are definetly awesome, can't wait to see some post shed pics.

my anery female. I was hoping for some Aztecs het anery but Oh well. Great litter guys!

wetceal Jun 01, 2007 02:04 AM

of congratulations and emails everyone!

I'm glad to see others as excited about this project as we are. We weren't sure what to expect with the combination of the Aztec with the Hypo gene since the Hypo gene has proven to be such a strong, dominating gene in the past. With the Aztec pattern being so intricate in its "controlled chaos", I wasn't sure if the Hypo gene would completely alter it and make it unrecognizable. Fortunately, it didn't and we definitely couldn't be happier with this outcome!

On an interesting side note, the female dam to these babies is from the Salmon bloodline. We have another gravid female that the Aztec was bred to that is a possible Super Hypo from the Orange-tail/Gee lineage. I am very curious to see if the babies from this lineage will come out any different looking!

I'm also curious to see if there is a Super Aztec and if so, what that will look like! Hopefully we won't have to wait too much longer to find out!

There's definitely LOTS of EXCITING stuff still to come!!

Thanks again!

Again congratulations on the worlds first ever Hypo Aztecs. Holding our breath for the next litter and what the future holds for Aztecs. Take care. Andrew and Bob

Congratulations Ma and Pa! They're exquisitely beautiful, indeed! I'm no expert and I'm terrible with all things mathematical, but if my calculations are correct, there will be twenty new tiny piles of poo for me to clean up very shortly! (Am I disturbed or wrong for taking pride in that?!?!?)
