logging hrs towards Venomous License

storm86 May 31, 2007 10:33 PM

Hi, my name is Storm Kaufman. I am a Biology student at LMU. I am finishing up my last year at college. Reptiles are my life. I have been breeding and maintaining reptiles since I can remember. I will eventually go on to get my Masters in Herpetology. I have had a little training with hots before. I would really like to find a place where I can get a lot of hands on training and recieve a venomous license so I can keep and breed snakes while educating people. Do you know of a place where I could get such training in South Florida. I live in Broward County, FL.

thanks,
Storm

There are lots of places around you that deal with vens. The hard part is getting them to let you work!!! It took me a LONG TIME to find anyone to teach me. I live in Fort Myers and would be willing to help out but i'm on the other coast about 2hrs away. What speicies are you looking to focus on?

Good luck

I'm looking to focus on cobras and gilas.

And I'm an hour and a half or so south of you. I know someone in Ft. Lauderdale who might be able to point you in the right direction, but he's out of town at the moment. I'll get in touch.

That would be great if you could get in contact with him and let me know. I really appriciate it. What species do you focus on?

I got mine through volunteering at several institutions and other documented sources. It took a few years to get the hours but it was worth it.

My emphasis/interest was in vipers and helodermatids so that is what I got my experience in.

Its a nice feeling to get your VRL, and says loads about your commitment and professionalism.

I'm so jealous that you have your VRL. I can't wait until I recieve mine. I'm just waiting right now trying to find my big break of finding someone that will be willing to help me down here. Good luck with everything.

Also I don't know if you are aware of this but I'm pretty sure that if you have a degree in biology or zoology that you only have to do 500 hours for your VRL. Some one please correct me if I am wrong.

Your doing the right thing. Start off with requests get to know those local and something will open up.

The key is if you are serious and mature someone will take you on. Too many kiddies out there want their mambas and those types are the ones overlooked

Thank you for the info. I am very serious about getting into the venomous reptiles. I also want to get my crocodilian license but getting my VRL is my first priority.

thanks, storm
