next week, looking good

Herpo Jun 01, 2007 11:54 AM

I generally don't plan a herping trip more than 3 hours in advance - the time it takes me to make two thermoses of coffee and get to the val verde county line. However this year I have an alterna novice coming down from OH on Monday, 6/4. we are starting a bit early to avoid the "dark of the moon rush".
I plan to be on 277 monday night, kill time in Del Rio, head west towrd the Pecos Tues. afternoon, work our way toward Sanderson. We will be at the Outback Oasis on Wed. and Thur, then to Ft. Davis and work our way back to Abilene.

Since we will be in a reantl I have no idea what we will be driving but if you are in the area and see an old fart and an overwight yankee pulling snakes off the cuts every 20 minutes, stop and say "Hi."

Then there will be two "yankees" in the car. I think Syracuse is about as yankee as you can get without being Canadian. More so than the men in pinstripes further east. I've realized for years you want to be a redneck but it's just not in your blood. lol

He tried to make it to the Mexican border but was a little too tall to fit in.

wasn't born in NY, just had parents that didn't realize the warmer climates were better for living, if not for earning. Grew up in Cazenovia, lived in Fayetteville for a few years after I got out of the military. Quit the corporate world in '72 and went herping.

Hey Wayne, John's still living off all the money he made off me in the 80's selling alterna! He's independantly wealthy now and I'm broke!!! BA

alterna63 Jun 02, 2007 11:54 PM

Are you sure they were actually alterna and not those little plastic conduit that he paints up from time to time??

Wayne

Herpo Jun 03, 2007 12:26 AM

NEVER, NEVER would I paint conduit. I do only the most discriminately selected aged mesquite roots..

alterna63 Jun 03, 2007 01:18 AM

OH NO NO NO John!! Several years ago on 277 nearing the tall cuts where I woke you as* up one morning (remember that?) between those cuts and the picnic area, you took responsibility for a little plastic conduit alterna placed on the cuts coming out of a crevice! Nice Blairs phase too! Kim got excited!..........then she wanted to kill you! It did wake us up though!

it wss one I found, then. I have one I found in fall of '93 E. of Sanderson. I was pulling a 10' U-haul on my way to AZ and decided to spot a bit. It was so darned good it wasn't until I was a few inches from grabbing it that I realized it was a fake. I keep it in the colubrid room, crawling under a closet door and most people who enter the room grab for it, yelling "You have a snake loose."

alterna63 Jun 03, 2007 12:36 PM

and yet another mystery is solved!

I was born there in '76, adopted 2 week later
Didnt really grow up there. Dad went to S.U. Grandparents lived there all of their lives. Much of moms family lives there still in suburban Onandoga County. Saw my first milk snake there as a child while visiting. I remember it being under a huge piece of landscaping slate and being screaming red and white. Still a very vivid memory.
I dont pay attention to any sports unless it's the Orange playing.

Too cold and dirty when it snows. I prefer SE Virginia thanx, but could still improve for sure.
