I knew it...Slug Fest.

RyanT Jun 01, 2007 06:03 PM

I had a feeling this was gonna happen. This girl just didn't look or feel right the whole time she was gravid. I even posted a question about if anyone else has ever been able to tell slugs were coming. My biggest female. I was expecting like a dozen eggs from her, and I get this pile of crap. Oh well though. Can't win 'em all. I'm actually not even that bummed. I still have 15 other healthy eggs in the incubator, and another clutch on the way in the next couple days that I can tell will be healthy. Plus I just had a beautiful clutch hatch last weekend. Hope she gets whatever problem she has, fixed for next year.

I noticed her laying this morning at 6AM before I left for work. That's when I took the first pic. Everything looked good. I thought the clutch was definitely going to be small, but actually looked healthy. Well, when I got home and took her off, I realized the 2 eggs I could see were the ONLY healthy ones. 2 have good veins, 1 of those is the size of a golf ball though. One has very miniscule veins, and the boob has none. I'm sure I'll be removing those 2 soon, cause they'll be going bad. But I threw them in for now for the hell of it. The rest were slugs. Anyway, just wanted to share my little piece of disappointment for the day. But like I said, really no biggie. Thanks for looking. Ryan.

Reading your post, looks like your blaming the female for the slugs. Wouldn't you blame the male also? When a female lays a clutch of slugs, is it because she did not develope properly, or, could it have been the male, shooting ..... blanks?
I had a pastel throw a clutch this season, that was bred by a male spider, that basically slugged out. So, I doubled up the other females that was bred by him. Meaning.... I went back and used another male spider to the females I had him with.
Only time will tell if they throw better clutches.... my fingers are crossed.... good luck on your other clutches...

Hey Ron. Not really "blaming" anything other than just timing, I guess. She just didn't take right. Didn't have enough follicles, wasn't ready yet, her first clutch ever, etc. I know, it happens. As far as the male, he bred 5 females, I have 3 clutches from him already that are perfect, and another still on the way. So I definitely wouldn't put the problem on him. Like I said, it just happens.

Is there any point in keeping the boob egg in there? It seriously has no veins at all and candles clear yellow. I know I'm answering my own question, but I've just heard that boobs can hatch. Of course only if they happen to be fertile though. Someone just tell me to throw it out, so I can. Haha.

For the one with very light veins, that one will mostly die off too, correct? Anyone had the experience of hatching a healthy baby from an egg with approximately 10 very thin veins? It has some pink coloration when candled, but not much at all. I'm expecting it to go bad quickly.

If your not hurting for space in your incubator, I say keep them. Let time take it's cource. If they go bad, then, they go bad. But, if they don't... you got good eggs.
I've had some real funky looking eggs over the years, hatch out perfectly good babies.
And, like wise, I've had perfectly good looking eggs go bad.
Some times you can blame the incubator. Some times you can just blame dumb luck.
I'm not a big fan of incubators anyway. To many things that can go wrong in a short amount of time.
I just heat a room to 88 degrees, and let nature take it's cource. Listen to those people screaming.... what? no incubator?? Yep. I place the clutch in a 2.5 gallon bucket with vermculite and place glass on top. This year, I used some 5 gallon buckets also. (ran out of the smaller ones).
I keep my snake room warm anyway, so for the past few years, I gave my incubators a vacation, and let the room do the incubating. So far.... 38 clutches have hatched.
Must be doing something right. Or I'm just lucky.
So, keep the eggs. If they hatch, your lucky too.

No inc? I think that is very cool that you have an alternate successful technique. Would love to see pix of the eggs in their glory!

I know probably nobody cares, but I disagree with your statement. You ARE using an incubator. It's called a "walk in" incubator.. the whole room is heated... what's the difference?

Bristen.
