Knoblochi probe depth?

SnakesAndStuff Jun 01, 2007 07:59 PM

I have 3 knoblochi that I'd say were male due to apparent hemipenal bulges and probe depth (all over them over 6 scales deep, and usually once it goes that deep I don't tend to go deeper).

I'm a pitviper guy and usually don't work much with kingsnakes, but I had 3 male (or I thought) knoblochi and was going to sell them next week... However, today while cleaning cages one of my "males" had 4 eggs in the cage.

What is typical probe depth on these animals? I've probed probably 1000 snakes and am confident in my probing and think that the cloaca is intact. This snake either has hemipenes or REALLY deep scent glands.

6 scales deep sounds like a male to me..

My thoughts exactly... The deepest I can think of any "female" snake probing would be 3, *maybe* 4 subcaudals. Imagine my surprise when I saw 4 eggs this morning from a "male".

On the bright side you got some Knob. eggs and if the eggs are good.. at least you know you don't have 3 females!

I was thinking more along the lines of the one that laid eggs possibly being a hermaphrodite. The clocal anatomy definately suggests male... It only laid 4 eggs, which makes me wonder. It's definately an animal I'll be dissecting whenever it dies...
