Help my snake is loose

balisong Jun 01, 2007 08:06 PM

I was cleaning out my corn snake's cage today and she broke out of her tubaware container that I put her in when I'm cleaning her cage. She was able to pry the lid off while I was in the bathroom disinfecting her cage's stuff. I know that she is in the same room as I left her in. I checked under the bed, behind dressers and shelves, in the closet but she is nowhere to be found. How can I set up a trap to catch her?

At the moment I have her hide box and water bowl underneath a shoe box with a hole cut in for an entrance. If it helps she is a 3 ft. long anery. I also know that she has not gone into the heating vents. Please help I am getting very worried about her.

It is pretty simple. Use an appropriate size plastic soda bottle, for a small snake use a 16-20 oz bottle, for a larger snake use a 2 litre bottle. Cut the top off the bottle right where it is the largest. Then insert the top of the bottle backwards into the bottom of the bottle. What you are doing is making a fancy funnel type trap. Put the trap that you have baited with a frozen/thawed mouse of the appropriate size in the house where you think they may be on the floor. You can put one of those heat pads under it. Leave it overnight. In the morning, hopefully you will come out to a sleeping snake in the bottle.

I made the trap last night, no luck yet. Approximately how long would it take for her to come out of her hiding and eat the mouse? I also laid down some duct tape in hopes of getting her caught in it. No success there either, but I will continue my search for her.

because it sticks so badly, I would use scotch tape set out in lil sections about half inch apart, so that when she crawls over it, she gets all tangled up and makes noise. Another good idea would be to set up the scotch tape sticking a bit of it to a plastic grocery sack and lay it on top of the sack. The idea is that the snake will make noise and alert you when it's stuck. The duct tape when pulled off the snake may pull scales away, be very careful.

And be patient. Sooner or later you will see the snake crossing a room. I have had many escapes over the years but have never actually lost one.

The snake can go along time without food but I have found they will seek out water. Try using a tape trap around a bowl of water. Put it in an area where the snake will feel secure, not in the center of the room.

I still have not found her yet. I have checked my shoes and every crevice in the house and still nothing. I'm now using scotch tape instead of duct tape. I do not think it will be much longer till I find her because she has to get water sometime and I have that set out next to the bottle trap as well as scotch tape surrounding the water dish.

Would mouse maker be a good scent lure for her to come into my traps?

Sometimes they can make it up into things that you would never believe. Check the tops and inside of all your blinds, curtains, lamps, light fixtures, etc. Look under the stove, refrigerator, dishwasher, etc. Go back and check everywhere again. Look in your clothes baskets, inside your clothes drawers. Look inside the dishwasher, washer, dryer. We found an escaped corn snake coming out of a window air conditioner. We also found a rainbow boa inside a timberland boot (poor snake - but he was okay). Look UNDER the cage/tank. But be very careful that you do not shift anything that might squash the snake. Look inside of bookshelves, move the books out to make sure the snake is not hiding on top of them. Lift up your trashcans (kitchen, bath, bedroom) and check under them. Check under your mattress between it and the boxspring.

I still have not found her. I have pretty much taken the living room and my bed room apart and still nothing. I am pretty sure though that she is not in the living room anyways because the pet bird is still there. I know that she is not where I last saw her because she was in a container on top of a book shelf and I searched through every shelf and the only book there. I just don't know where she could have gone. I used tape to close off all small openings so that she can't get into heating vents or into sliding door closets.
