Yes... Another question on Genetics.

Chrysemys Aug 16, 2003 09:56 AM

Ok, I have some eggs from my female that she layed about 3 weeks ago and are doing great. My male is a tang, that is het for patternless and albino. My female is a High Yellow. Will their offspring be double hets as well? Thanks,
Chris D.

Tangerine and High Yellow are both line bred traits while Patternless and Albino are simple recessive traits. The results of your breeding should yield the following results:
25% Normal
25% het. Patternless
25% het. Albino
25% het. Patternless het. Albino

Of course, they will all look normal, so you won't be able to tell which ones carry which genes.

Since you are dealing with two traits you won't get 1 in four double hets you will only get 1 in 16,as each trait will express itself 1 in four times the chance of two showing up in one gecko is 1 in 16

Chad is exactly right, no idea what you are talking about but it's not right. See the genetics calculator here to an understanding of how it works:

You're right I tried to do the genetics in my head and thought about it as two sets rather than the four sets of possible alleles, thanks for catching that Starling and just to warn you I've made that same mistake before and will make it again.

So they will carry the het genetics? All offspring will be double hets like the father? Thanks,
Chris D.

Chad said 25% would be double hets not all of them.

Just remember that those numbers are a statistical average. It is entirely possible that you will not get any hets at all.

Any offspring has a 50% chance of being het for either trait. THese are called "possible hets". So you would call them 50% possible het patternles, 50% possible het albino. You should get 25% normal (not het), 25% het patternless, 25% het albino, 25% het patternless albino.
