Update & new pic of 06' golden corn

BlueKing Jun 02, 2007 12:13 AM

Had no luck breeding the 05' babies. Guess the females weren't quite big enough yet. But Mom & her biggest son bred and she produced 9 good eggs (out of 14). At least it's a better ratio than last year: (4 out of 16...).
I'm slowly getting this project going. Just wish the (05') females would have produced THIS year! At least next year they'll be more than ready.
Here's a pic of one of the two golden corn babies (the other is currently in shed):

Thank you. I wish I wouldn't had gone overseas for a year. I could have powerfed them all, (to ensure a sooner breeding, lol)! But I still think my wife did an EXCEPTIONAL job with them while I was gone!!!

Very nice!

Is that an offspring from last years son to mother crossing? or is it from somewhaere else in the project?

Just wondering as I wasn't sure if you had produced offspring exhibitng the golden trait. Also wondering as to whether we know yet if it is simple recessive, co-dom, etc..

Thanks for sharing.

Sean.

That is one of only two that came out (with that trait) after my first son & mother breeding... This year I have nine eggs (son & mother pairing) cookin' . We'll see what comes out of those

It would appear that it is a simple recessive trait. Only more breeding trials will prove that though. Or it could be (dare I say?) a new co-dom morph? I would breed one of the males next year to a normal female not from that area.....

Very cool! I remember when you first posted the original one after you caught it...

It's always nice to see breeding projects come through as expected

Wow!!! that sibling certainly has the golden trait, i need to get on a list for a pair of those.....

BlueKing Jun 04, 2007 02:03 PM

Thanks... What is most interesting, is that they seem to get a little more yellow in them each time they shed. (they started off looking gray and brown). Hopefully I will get a few more this year and I SHOULD get enough next year when all my hets will be old enough to breed!

Were the golden hatchlings immediately visibly identifiable from their hetrozygous siblings? Or did you have to wait until they had grown a bit to be able to differentiate them?

Also I forgot if you mentioned it previously but what type of corn did you initially breed your WC golden to in order to produce the het's? Mostly asking because of curiosity about the regional appearance influence on the golden trait.

The mother was a WC miami was she not? Or am I misremembering where you caught her?

Thanks for any info and good luck with this years hatchlings.

You may have already answered this, but have you test-bred it against a caramel yet?
Thanks,
