substrate for gtf?

lele Aug 16, 2003 10:42 AM

Hi,

I adopted a gtf yesterday that hitch-hiked home on a plant (see post below). I am not sure if I will keep him/her or not but would like to set him up well even if temporary. Right now I am using river stone and repti-bark as substrate but read that the repti-bark is not a good idea. Can I just have the river stone as substrate since he spends most time off the ground? Also What do you use for hides? Thanks!

I would not use riverstones as a substarte as they hold very little humidity, aswell with your gtf, will prefer a more natural substrate such as Bed-A-Beast.

As you said Repti-bark, or any other small objects made into a substrate are not a good idea, as impaction can occur.

Ps:Did you see my post to your first question, oh and in the chameleon forum. Someone said you can keep him with anoles. NO YOU CAN NOT, it will cause stress to both animals.

Hi Steven,
Thanks. You are right about river stone and humidity (duh, as I slap my forehead! LOL!) Now, about these Bed-a-beast, eco-earth and others - are any better than others? What about coca-fiber?

Yeah, I decided the anole/gtf wasn't such a good idea anyway. How about with my little house gecko since they are both small - won't eat each other- like similar habitat, eat similar food, etc. Thanks, again!

It's never a good idea to mix any frogs with any lizards or one frog species with another species - mixing is a disaster asking to happen.
As far as the substrate, b-a-b etc are coco husk fiber and are IMO the best to use.
And, a tree frog hanging out on the ground most of the time is a sign of a problem. Be it an illness or problem in the set up, it's never an indication of anything good. Check out this link for great info on GTFs:

Thanks Becki - I'll give it a try. In my original post I said b/c he was OFF the ground not ON Actually he seems to prefer the glass over anything. I watched him/her feast on hydeii ff last night via my red bulb - I think one of the neatest things about herps is watching them eat. I don't know why - I guess b/c I find the life cylces and behaviors of all thermo-reg animals so fascinating. It was great entertainment!

As for housing togehter I thought if it was a large enough enclosure but I think even then I'd be taking a chance - so I won't

thanks again and great site!

Becki pretty much summed it up! When housing a species, only hosue THAT species. Lizards, and frogs, frogs, with other frog species, its not even an option!

I personally like bed-a-beast the best. I can't remember, what brand I used once, but some molded very fast. I've never had those problems with bed-a-beast though.

Glad I'v helped,
Steven
