New owner needs help!!

Lisa197174 Aug 16, 2003 11:03 AM

I received a African clawed frog about three months ago from someone who was really neglecting it. It was in 2 inches of water in a critter keeper plastic tank, no filter etc. I moved him into a ten gallon with a bio wheel filter and he seemed very happy. Hes about 3 inches long with his legs extended. My question is that for the past three days he hasnt eaten! He used to eat like a maniac. He doesnt look sick (not that I would really know what a sick frog looks like)I give him the small floating sticks. Hes not real thin like when I got him where you could almost see through him to his organs. Help! My 4 yr old son will be devastated.

Sometimes they will go off of feed for a while don't worry too much unless he starts getting thin, but keep offering him food.

Try turning off the filter for a few days. The stress of the move combined with the stress of a filter might be too much right now. One small frog in a ten gallon should be OK for a few days without a filter, although you will need to change the water a little more. Also, what temperature is he at? Try more "live" foods such as blood worms, "fish gum drops", small crickets, or pieces of earthworm. Also, does he have a place to hide? ACF love to hide in cages, logs, ect.

His temp is at about 76 degrees without a heater. He has lots of places to hide, I made sure of that. I havent tried any kind of live food with him yet. I have only given him the floating little sticks wcich he used to devour. Its been like a week now since hes eaten normal. Saturday he ate and I got excited then he hasnt eaten since. Could it be because his tank is at the end of cycling and the Nitrites are high? But I would have thought he would have done this when the ammonia was real high mid cycle, no?

The ADFs i used to have would do this a few times a year for about a week. I am speculating(I cant guarantee this is right but its just my explanation) that the frog now has ample fat stores in its body to survive for awhile without food so it will just become lazy and not catch food for awhile. Whos knows if I'm right or not but if I was a frog, thats what I'd do!
