Egg size revisted...

JP Jun 02, 2007 08:05 PM

So, I posted last week about my monster egg clutch...7 eggs at a whopping 979 grams (thats right at 140g per egg). SO today, I get my third clutch of the season. 8 eggs at a measly 750 grams (thats under 94g per egg). That's a pretty extreme difference, don't ya think?

Anyone else out there have any extremes to share?

Seems to me like there is some interesting science to be done. I'm especially looking forward to seeing how egg weights correlate with hatchling weights.

I would be more than happy to compile some data if anyone wants to send some. I guess the most interesting data that we can glean from captive clutches would be egg size, hatchling size, incubation interval, and incubation temps. Any other easily obtainable data worth looking at?

Send me some numbers if you have them or are willing to do them over the next year or two. Any comments or suggestions are certainly welcome.

Anyway, here is a pic of the scrawney clucth. Scan down and compare it to my big clutch I posted earlier...

This is my first breeding season, so I'm not sure how much help I'll be but I think it would be interesting to keep track of egg/hatchling weights. I only have one clutch so far (I expect at least one more). It was 5 eggs, all were fertile, and it weighed 475g. I will post hatchling weights when they hatch. It should be about a month or so.

Thanks,
Shelly

Nothing scientific, but in general, the larger the clutch, the smaller the egg weight. But not always. But I'd say my eggs average 94 grams. I think I've only had one clutch where the eggs where over 100 grams: 110 I believe.

I had a female that weighed about 2400 grams lay a clutch of 4 eggs. The clutch weighed 674 grams and they just hatched out. I ended up with two lesser plattys and two normal sibs. They all weighed between 102-106 grams a piece right out of the egg. These are my biggest babies I have ever produced soe far. Take care Paul
