Might have been duped

SPJ01 Jun 02, 2007 09:34 PM

I had purchased this animal as an import desert ghost with the plans for breeding him next season.

Now after having posted a few pictures of him for the first time, I have been emailed stating that he has characteristics similiar to an arctic.

Don't both desert ghosts and arctics look similiar? What is the defining characteristic to tell them apart before breeding them?

I am a bit concerned since this has been brought up because there is quite a price difference between what an artic would have run me versus what it ran me for this desert ghost.

That's the thing about imports...you really don't know what you are going to get, nor can you guarantee that it is genetic!

That may be true in some cases but to be charged the price of a desert ghost and find out it may be an arctic is just plain dishonest IMO.

only if they knowingly jacked up the price. it's an import so no one can be sure what it is, for all you know you bought a sweet normal with ghost coloration. you just have to wait till it proves out now and see what the F2 gen looks like. but either way, i think he's pretty sweet.

You are not the first person to buy a morph and it not be what you thought it was. I think trial and error has played a large part in creating all of the proven genetic mutations that we have, and some people along the way have invested larger amounts of money than was necessary to get a project started. If you are going to invest in potential morphs you will loose some money, but you might make more if you prove one out. If you want guaranteed morphs then buy one. I don't mean to sound harsh or anything, it is just the facts of the business.

He's a beautiful animal whatever he turns out to be - the unfortunate side to imports is that you do have to breed those aberrant ones out to find out what they are - often times we see non genetics at work such as egg stress, poor diet and nutrition or stress related changes that produce these aberrancies.

Good luck with him - hopefully he'll prove out for you!!!!

BTW: how is Lucky doing?

Had her first meal Thursday and has kept it down.
I think she is going to make a 100% turn around.

Hey SP,

Has he shed? Is it patternless?
