HELP! What is wrong with my Boa???

boafanatic7 Jun 03, 2007 02:34 PM

I noticed this today. It wasn't there a few days ago. It looks like some scales on her head are rotting, but only on her head, around her eyes and under her jaw??? She has been kept in optimal conditions, feeds great, and has had no contact with any other animal???

What is this and how did it get there aandd most important, how do i treat it??????????

Looks like some pretty nasty rubbing has been going on
Are the sores wet or dry ?
Better pics would be helpful

Do the scales actually look damaged or are they just a different color? If its just a different color it could be from newspaper print, or other items that could have stained her scales. Can you get a closer pic of the area?

I'll try to get a closer pic, but she isn't easy to shoot..and my camera ain't that great...

But its not newspaper print, nor is it rubbing, it really just looks as if those individual scales have rotted.

What could it be??

another pic, i wish i could get a clear close up but my lens won't allow it.

Notice how she has the same rotting type scales along the rim of her jaw top and bottome...this can't be due to rubbing.

Has this ever happened to anyone?

Only time I have seen something similar to these in person was a case where one of my Kenyans which had water left in with it while I was gone for a week seemed to get blisters from her spilling her dish and laying in the water spill. What I did was put a little neosporin on the raw spots and kept her on just paper towels for the next few weeks till she shed out. It is really odd to see on the face but you don't see it anywhere else.

What type of bedding are you using? If wood chips, perhaps burrowing is causing her to rough up her scales and the bedding is a bit to damp? Other then that I am at a loss.

Good luck with her.

I keep her on shaved aspen bedding, as i do with all my animals. AS for laying on dampened bedding, that is possible but unlikely because i didn't notice it as the bedding was pretty dry and loose.

Something came to mind though, last week when i cleaned her cage, i left her in it becasue only one side was dirty, and i didn't really want to disturb her...i sprayed a nolvasan solution on the wiped up dirty area to disinfect...there is a chance some of the spray may have hit her face, as i remember her face being not to far from where i was spraying but not too close either...i always assumed this to be a safe product to use around my boas...but if the concentration of nolvasan was too high...would it cause this reaction on a boa's scales?? i just don't know...but it's all i can think of that would of caused this...i usually measure my nolavsan solution to water on what's recommended.

I wouldn't expect it to cause a chem burn, but any chemical can cause a burn I suppose depending on the exposure. That seeing how nothing else fits sounds like a plausible cause.
