100% het piebald breeding?

mannyrottie Jun 03, 2007 06:33 PM

if I breed a 100% het piebald male to a 100% het piebald female, will I get any visual piebalds? Another scenario, if I breed a 100% het piebald male to a normal female, what will I get then?

Het piebald x het piebald will produce the following genotypes:

25% normal
50 % het piebald
25% piebald

You will not be able to definitively identify the het piebalds from the normals. Each normal appearing neonate would be concidered 66% possible het for piebald

Het piebald x normal will produce the following genotypes:

50% normal
50% het piebald

You will again not be able to definitively identify the het piebalds from the normals. All neonates would be concidered 50% possible het for piebald.

So if I do breed a het male and a het female then I should at least get 1 out of 4 eggs that are visuals? Thats cool. Do you know anyone that has hatchlings 100% het female piebalds?

Those percentages given by the previous poster are not what you should expect from any one clutch. What they mean is that in a het to het breeding, EACH EGG has a 25% chacne of being a piebald, a 50% chance of being a het, and a 25% chance of being a normal. Each egg is a completely seperate event. If the first 10 eggs all are piebald, the eleventh still has the same 25% chance of being one also. Its an important distinction. If you had a clutch of 8 eggs, you could have 8 piebalds, 8 normals, 8 hets, or any combination of the three.

That is the clearest explanation I have gotten. Good job. So have you ever heard of a full clutch being all the visual morph like all hatchlings being piebalds? Must make some really happy keepers.

It has happened or very close to it in the past. People here in the past have posted nearly 100% morph offspring from a het to het pairing.
