Opinions.. Nikon D40x or Sony Alpha100

Hi there,
I am getting ready to purchase a new camera for hobby purposes, and I am mainly going to use it for animal photography. I want to get better quality shots, with better equipment, so these are the two finalists for me. But which one do you think is better? They are both around the same price, so dont use cost as a unit of measure. Just give me your opinions on these two cameras so I can make a better decision on which one is right for me. I have held both, and read up on both, but I have not been able to use either one. Thanks in advance for your help.

Neither... buy a Canon Rebel XTi or a used Canon 20D or even a 30D Canon's lense line up is far superior to the Nikkors .
