Slim in watering system

aetienne Jun 04, 2007 04:01 PM

I have a five gallon bucket with black 3/8 tube feeding 15 variflow nipples. Now that I am running the rack a "little slower" and the rats don't go through quite as much water I am getting a opaque slime that clogs the nipples. What is the best method of preventing this?

Thanks,
Al

If it were me I would run some bleach water through the system now and then. However often it takes to keep it slime free. I do similar with my antiquated bottle system. All the bottles and nipples get bleach soaked and scrubbed about once every two months.

I know this sounds terribly lazy, but I was hoping not to have to take everything apart every few months. Maybe one or two drops of bleach in the water every other refill? Some tablet in the water, etc...

I will take everything down and clean it this time to address the issue.

Thanks,
Al

I would appear that you can use as much as eight drops per gallon with five percent bleach. I would really love to know what other people are doing.

Thanks again,
Al

I have never tried it with rodents but it is commonly done with birds in their water. I helps to prevent mouth rot.

I used to raise raceing pigeons and I would put a cap ful of bleach in a 1 1/2 gallon water can every day. The birds never showed any ill efects. People drink clorine all over America

A cap full of bleach in five gallons of water seems to do the trick.
