My buddy sent me these pics of what he and I thought were black rats breeding, but everyone on the ratsnake forum thinks it is male combat behavior. Pretty cool stuff to witness. They were found in his backyard in Virginia. He said they were doing this for a few hours.

I agree. It looks like two males. They usually make the S shape at their necks, try to push the other off, or get over the other male.
