Egg dimpling at 3 weeks

Dangerously Jun 04, 2007 06:52 PM

My clutch has been in the incubator for about 3 weeks now and I'm seeing some dimpling. Is this normal, or is there a problem? Temps seem to be ok (88 - 90), and humidity around 92 - 94%. Could they be losing moisture, or is slight dimpling a part of the process? (I posted this in breeding issues as well, but didn't receive an answer there).

Thanks for any help/tips.

it's hard to say. If its very slight, and doesn't seem to be getting worse, I think you're fine. Occasionally I'll have a couple that dent slightly early on, then hold their own. If it seems to get worse, post back with info on your set-up (type of substrate, type of incubator, type and condition of egg box, etc., etc.). If you're opening the gg box frequently to "check" on them that could lead to the problem as well...

In my experience, adequately hydrated eggs do not dimple/deflate this early into incubation. Like JP said, it depends on how much. But even slight dimpling could indicate your humidity is too low. It could also mean the beginning of the end - dying eggs.

I had an egg that was dimpled when it was laid. I thought with proper humidity it would pop out, but it never happened. It actually got worse. I figured it was going to die off, but left it just in case. By the time the rest of the clutch started to pip, the "dimpled" egg had caved in half way. After all the others hatched, I cut it open just to see and surprise, it was alive. I left it in the egg and it came out 3 days after all the rest and only about 10 grams smaller. It was slow to start feeding, but is doing great. So, never give up on an egg untill it starts smelling funny.

I would say their was just something wrong with that egg I have never seen then laid dimpeled in like they were dry abit. But i have seen them with a part of the shell concaved alittle and when they get close they do cave in allot like you said .

I think if you added just alittle bit more water ,not much and ounce or so sould do. Is there air holes in your tubes ? If you add alittle water by the time it starts to work ,it will be about the time they start to dimpel . It would take about a week for them to pop bake up. I would add alittle water to it with out getting any on the eggs. This is a nice clutch of balls the father was a Y.B. Thet were close to 3 weeks here
