Texas River Cooter

karenb Jun 04, 2007 07:19 PM

I live in East Texas. We found a large turtle trying to get in our fenced yard several weeks ago. I finally figured out what kind of turtle she is and got her a pool for water and rocks to climb in and out with. Long story short...I went outside to check on her today and there was a turtle egg in the water! What should I do?

Ideally, you should let her go. The reason she has laid an egg in the water is because she was unable to find a suitable nesting site (ie. somewhere she can dig a hole in a deep substrate to deposit her eggs). She'll have more eggs inside of her and will need to lay those somewhere as well, other than in the water.
