Lola Update

Raveness_d Jun 04, 2007 10:23 PM

So my girl shed this evening, and looks splendid, I might add. She had some retained eyecaps and nasty flakes on her scutes, and those are gone now, so I'm happy about that. I'm sure she is too.

Anyhow, the wheeze is actually marginally better. She finally gave me a fecal sample too, so we can get to testing for bugs.
She still wouldn't eat for me, though. It's been two weeks. I attribute it to her being in shed, and I hope she'll take something next Monday.

Looking alot more comfy in her new skin.

A little OT but I need to vent. I'm having a frustrating time trying to find Black D'alberts... especially from a seller who is willing to ship to Canada and do the CITES paperwork. I know there were a few in the classifieds last month, but not many would even consider exporting unless I made an order over X amount of dollars.

I think Canada REALLY needs to catch up. I'm trying to do my part, but finding my foundation pair may take a lifetime!

That's GREAT news. Don't worry too much about the not eating, when hungry she will eat. since she pooped, she obviously has been eating.

I hope that Lola gets better. I agree with Dave on not worring about the eating. Being cold blooded she can go quite while without eating. My spotted pythons never eat while in shed, and it still raises my eybrows as I want everyhting perfect.

Danielle,
..Please do not be angry with breeders and dealers who will not ship to Canada. Here in the US CITES compliance is overseen by US Fish and Wildlife. The pile of paperwork required to export or import boids is way more than many of us are willing to do. I know people who have been prosecuted by US F&W for very minor errors in the paperwork or the import/export process and they have had to pay LARGE fines. To me it is just not worth the time and effort required or the risk of running afoul of the USF&W.

Jeff,

I'm not at all angry, just crestfallen and frustrated. I'd happily pay for any paperwork fees involved, but I understand that it's quite a bit of work. I had no idea that a breeder could be penalized in such a way for minor errors in the paperwork.

CITES was put in place to protect animals, but I think that in making it so difficult to import and export CB animals, it's defeating its purpose. Captive breeding efforts should be encouraged, and the "trade" of new blood between countries can only help the cause. Not to mention, there is so much more available over in the US than here in Canada.
Right now, it would be easier for me to get in freshly WC D'alberts than to buy CB ones from a breeder. It just seems ridiculous.

Danielle,
...It is a crazy world we live in. If captive breeders could easily ship their captive born animals worldwide it would take a big load of the pressure off of wild collecting of many species. Even with the load of paper work we are very close to the US exporting more Rainbow Boas than we import. The exports are almost all done by larger businesses who ship 50 or more snakes at a time. It does seem to me that with the demand for exotic snakes in Canada someone could make a business of coming to the big US shows with a large shopping list and buying several hundred animals and then doing the paper work to ship them home to Canada. The individual breeder cannot do all the paper work and export one pair of D'Alberts for a reasonable price but if someone did all the paper work at once for several hundred snakes it could be cost effective.
